Gig Harbor claims the Tacoma Narrows Bridge - all three of them! Bridge #1 fondly known as Galloping Gertie lays at the bottom of the Tacoma Narrows, where it fell in 1940 only 4 months after opening. The remains of Gallopin' Gertie are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Bridge #2 (now referred to often as the "old" bridge) opened in 1950 and has served the peninsula well for over 55 years. Bridge #3 (the "new" bridge" will open to the public in summer of 2007 as a parallel span to the "old" bridge, providing additional support for a growing population.
