Thunderbird 50th Anniversary Event This Summer
Gig Harbor Will Celebrate the 50th Anniversary Of The Thunderbird Sailboat On August 1, 2 and 3 and fifty 26 foot classics expected to visit the harbor of its origin

The 50th anniversary of the first Thunderbird classic sailboat will be celebrated in its home waters of Gig Harbor on August 1, 2 and 3, 2008. Presented by Fleet No. 1, the local Thunderbird owners club, the Harbor History Museum and the City of Gig Harbor, this exciting gathering of Thunderbird enthusiasts will include opening festivities, boating activities, a banquet, a Thunderbird exhibit and more, all commemorating this classic 26-foot plywood vessel.

Designed by Ben Seaborn, the first Thunderbird was built by Ed Hoppen, at Gig Harbor’s Eddon Boat Company, and launched in 1958. Constructed of plywood, Hoppen engineered a building method that would enable sailing enthusiasts to purchase plans for $2.00, put in sweat equity of 2000 hours in their own garage and come away with their own boat. By 1961, Thunderbirds began showing up on the water and, by 1962, over 400 were being sailed. An estimated 1,200 have been built worldwide. Hoppen himself built 16 Thunderbirds and sold 100 kits.

Thunderbird hull no. 1 was donated by Hoppen’s son, Guy, and daughter-in-law, Ann, to Gig Harbor’s Harbor History Museum, which is opening in its new, harbor-front location in late 2008. This legendary Thunderbird will be among the permanent displays of boat building, fishing and other local heritage. Thunderbird Fleet No. 1 remains in Gig Harbor to this day.

Originating from two-miles of walk-able harbor front and boasting one of the most scenic skyline views of Mt. Rainier, Gig Harbor is home to the original Thunderbird and Thunderbird Fleet #1. This vibrant community is notable for its maritime heritage, marinas, waterfront inns, bed and breakfasts and public parks, upscale and one-of-a-kind shops, art galleries, jewelers, paddle-boat rentals, and harbor-front restaurants, as well as its eye-catching gardens and garden centers.
